What this matrix covers

This matrix combines the recurring renewal obligation for a foreign-registered LLC with the filing detail: whether a report is required, the state fee, where and when it is filed, any franchise tax and late penalty, plus standard and expedited turnaround where the state publishes it.

How to read this matrix

Each row is a U.S. jurisdiction (50 states plus the District of Columbia). Fees are the state filing fee only and exclude any service fee. A typed unknown such as “Not observed” means the field was not stated in the state's published materials — a methodological limit, not a confirmed absence. Every figure is cited to the state's official source linked on each row. States can revise fees at any time — confirm against the linked source before filing. Method notes live at /about/methodology/.

Sources

Per-row primary-source citations live in the matrix's sources.json companion. The full source taxonomy lives at /about/source-registry/.

Frequently asked questions

How is foreign renewal different from foreign registration?

Registration is the one-time filing to begin doing business in a state; renewal is the recurring filing that keeps that registration active. This matrix covers the recurring side; the initial fee lives in the Foreign Registration matrix.

Does every state require a foreign LLC to renew?

Most do, through an annual or periodic report, though frequency and fees vary. The annual_report_required and filing_frequency columns record each state's requirement.

Are these fees current?

Each row links to the state's official source and is cited to that primary document; where a snapshot was captured, the figure is also verified against it. Confirm against the linked source before filing.
