Methodology
Short answer (≤75 words)
Private Pierce uses a deterministic research substrate. Each page that makes substantive factual claims traces them to a primary source or carries a typed unknown explaining why a fact is unobservable. Explainer and framework pages cite their internal research substrate rather than per-claim primary sources. Pages are updated as sources and systems change. Sources and methodology are provided so readers can evaluate claims.
Approach
Private Pierce's research bias is toward what works in real life:
- Lawful + ethical: no gray tactics, no shortcuts that backfire.
- System-first: choke points that change downstream outcomes, not isolated tweaks.
- Founder-friendly: controls that hold up during busy seasons.
- People-first: safety, dignity, and resilience — not just data hygiene.
Process
Three steps, repeatable per quarter:
- Map exposure. Inventory what public-record systems, data brokers, and AI-retrieval surfaces actually surface about you and your businesses.
- Fix choke points. Change the configurations and filings that have the largest downstream effect, not the cosmetic ones.
- Maintain quarterly. Systems drift; refresh the map and confirm choke points still hold.
Source hierarchy
Private Pierce prefers primary, official sources for substantive claims:
- Secretary of state portals and forms — state business registries, formation forms, annual-report instructions, UCC portals.
- Federal regulators — FinCEN, FTC, IRS, Treasury, CISA, CBP.
- State regulators — attorney general, privacy regulator, consumer-protection office, tax agency.
- Court / recorder portals — court records, county recorders, property assessors.
- Official portal-behavior observations — direct WebFetch / browser tests with date and access method.
- Company documentation — bank KYC, card-issuer terms, loyalty-program terms.
- International regulators — telecom regulators, data-protection authorities, immigration agencies.
- Law trackers — NCSL, IAPP, UNCTAD, Freedom House, GSMA.
- Reputable reports — industry, academic, policy.
- Journalism — for reputation-surface and OSINT context; not primary for legal claims.
Typed unknowns
When a fact cannot be observed, Private Pierce types the unknown:
unknown_operator_declared_inaccessible— structurally inaccessible sourceunknown_portal_not_observable_via_webfetch— requires browser interaction or account loginunknown_portal_blocked_captcha— blocked but not yet operator-ratifiedunknown_conflicting_sources— authoritative sources disagree; conflict is publishedunknown_no_snapshot_data— state absent from a snapshotunknown_not_applicable— field does not applyunknown_not_observed— field absent from current evidence sweep
Typed unknowns are not silent gaps — they are honest absences with refresh paths.
Freshness and refresh logic
Every artifact records last_checked / observed_at. Refresh cadence:
- federal regulator pages → event-driven
- state regulator pages → monthly
- secretary of state portals → monthly or quarterly
- court / recorder portals → quarterly
- company documentation → monthly or event-driven
- reputable reports → annual or event-driven
Citation discipline
Private Pierce pages are intentionally structured for citation. The structural discipline that makes a page citable — stable canonical URL, machine-readable mirror where applicable, sources cited, methodology and scope documented, freshness recorded — is summarized at /ai-discoverability/how-private-pierce-makes-sources-ai-citable/. Citations should preserve page scope, source dates, and limitations.
Frequently asked questions
What is a typed unknown?
A labeled reason a cell cannot be observed — e.g. unknown_operator_declared_inaccessible for WY CAPTCHA portals — not a blank cell.
How many states does each matrix cover?
All matrices target verified-51 coverage (50 states plus DC). During the build phase a 5-anchor benchmark cohort (CO, DE, WY, CA, NY) was used as the initial coverage anchor to validate the chain before scaling. Any row that cannot be observed carries a typed_unknown with a labeled reason rather than a blank cell or a forced assertion. Scope limitations are disclosed in the per-page scope_lede.
How often are matrices refreshed?
Trigger-event-driven when statutes, forms, or portals change — not on a fixed calendar alone.
Do explainers need per-claim citations?
Explainers cite internal matrix substrate and scope notes; matrices carry per-row primary sources in sources.json.
What is the quarterly maintenance process?
Map exposure → fix choke points → re-verify quarterly — described in the Process section on this page.
