Change of Registered Agent Fees by State

What each U.S. jurisdiction charges to change an LLC's registered agent — the standalone filing, not whatever larger form it sometimes rides on.

Your registered agent is the address the state and the courts use to reach your company. You change it when you switch agent services, when your agent resigns, or when you stop using your own address for the job. The filing is routine. The fee, in most states, is small or nothing — but a few of the numbers you'll see quoted are for a different filing entirely, and that is worth getting right before you pay.

What the fee actually is

This matrix records the marginal cost of the action: what changing your registered agent — and nothing else — costs you. Across the states that publish it, that runs from $0 to $100, and nine states charge nothing. A change of agent is a cheap, common filing; the headline number is rarely the obstacle.

California is the one to watch. You will see $20 quoted everywhere. That $20 is the Statement of Information (Form LLC-12) — the report California already requires every two years. Changing only your registered agent is an amended Statement of Information, and California does not charge for that. So the honest number for the agent change is $0; the $20 is a bill you were getting regardless. We list California at $0 and say why in the row note. Reading the biennial-report fee as a change-of-agent fee is how a free filing gets sold as a paid one.

California is the loud version of a quieter pattern: a few states price the change by how you file. Massachusetts is free online but $25 on paper or by fax; Idaho is free electronically but $20 if you mail a typed form; Nebraska is $25 online and $30 over the counter. The cheaper number is the state nudging you off paper — file the cheap way, and on a filing this routine the difference is real money.

How to read this matrix

Each row is a state or the District of Columbia. A figure of $0 means the state processes the change at no charge — confirmed against its published schedule, not assumed. Thirty-eight rows are backed by a captured snapshot; thirteen rows carry a source-chain flag (typed_unknown) because the official source URL has expired or could not be reached — those rows show fee values from prior verification pending re-sourcing. Confirm against the linked source before you file; fees move. Method notes live at /about/methodology/.

Sources

Per-row primary-source citations live in the matrix's sources.json companion. The full source taxonomy lives at /about/source-registry/.

Not legal advice

Whether a registered-agent change is a standalone filing or rides another form is state-specific and changes. This page is structured reference, not counsel. Confirm against the linked state source before filing.

Frequently asked questions

When do you file a change of registered agent?

Whenever an entity switches the person or company that receives its legal and state mail — for example, when moving to a commercial registered-agent service. The change is filed with the state, which may charge a filing fee; the matrix records that fee for LLCs and corporations.

Why do some states show a $0 fee?

A number of states process a registered-agent change at no charge, while others charge a filing fee. The matrix shows each state's amount and flags where it is free, with expedite options where the state offers them.

Are these fees current?

Each row links to the state's official source and is cited to that primary document; where a snapshot was captured, the figure is also verified against it. States can revise fees at any time — confirm against the linked source before filing.
